Abstract:
According to its current National Defense Strategy, Romania perceives
“destabilizing actions in the Eastern neighborhood” as a threat to its national security.
The paper aims to provide a historical analysis of the relations between the Romanian
principalities and Russia, as well as of narratives of Russian identity, in order to
understand what led to this situation. It begins by offering an overview of the method of
historical analysis and presents its advantages and disadvantages. Further, it sketches a
brief history of late Romanian-Russian relations during the late 18th and early 19 th
centuries. Finally, it concludes with showing the contemporary effects of historical
developments on different and competing narratives of Russian identity.

Keywords: Russia, national security, risk, National Defense Strategy,
destabilizing actions.
